COLLEGE FOOTBALL’S
MOST SUCCESSFUL TEAMS
Listed below are the winningest teams in the “modern” era of college football, covering the past five decades, the 50 years from 1953 through 2003.
Seven SEC teams are in the Top 20, including numbers 6, 8 and 11.
By comparison, the Big Ten has only three in the Top 20, but they are numbers 1, 4 and 5, although number 4 (Penn State) was only in the Big Ten for small percentage of those years.
The Big 12 has only three in the Top 20, numbers 2, 3 and 7, but number 7 (Texas) was a longtime member of the Southwest Conference.
The Pac-10 has only three in the Top 20, none higher than number 10, also having numbers 15 and 20.
Based on winning percentage covering the past 50 years, the SEC clearly has been the nation’s strongest college football conference, and this winning record is in spite of the fact that those teams have to beat each other up for most weekends of the fall.
